The Everyday Designer #7 — The power of boredom

And why every creative should lean into it.

You’ve been feeling it, you’re in a rut. Inspiration isn’t striking like you think it should. You start to panic as you think, “Is that it?”. Did you run out of it all? Was that last idea you had, the last one you ever will?

Calm down. Take a breath. You’re okay. Sit with it.

It’s ok to be bored

Get used to the feeling of being bored. You don’t need to be inspired every single minute of the day. You don’t need to be in a constant state of stimulation. Give yourself a break. Give your brain a break! Go take a nap, that will do your brain more good than any Dribbble session or Pinterest mood boarding ever could.

The point is, its okay to be bored.

Being bored helps inspiration come naturally, which I know sounds arbitrary but its straight up facts.

Ever had the most incredible ideas come to your mind when you’re taking a shower? Great. Join the club. Or ever went for a walk around the block and when you came back, felt like you could tackle all of the world’s problems head on? Yup. Me too.

Do you remember the last time you sat with yourself, and you maybe did a little daydreaming? Do you remember where your mind went to? The ideas it came up with, the places it wandered off into?

Boredom is your friend, not your enemy

I think as creatives, we have to relearn how integral boredom is to our creative process. Even just as humans, learning to play again, not only keeps things interesting, but is also so inspiring for us.

Today’s was short and sweet, hopefully you still got something out of it! :)

I love sharing what I’ve been up to lately and this is one way for me to let you in on what’s been happening in my life.

📚 Currently reading: Rich Dad, Poor Dad - I have been told now on 5 separate occasions by different people to read this book. I will now listen to all the signs that have been sent my way, and maybe it will change my life. I’m excited to learn about the principles of business and how it can be applied to life!

🌿 Currently inspired: WillGamble/Architects - The Parchment Works - man these architects know exactly what they’re doing with their projects, and all the builds are exactly the style I love for my dream house. A mix of the old blended in with the new. The Parchment Works is no exception of that. A masterpiece, have a look then!

😄 Currently excited about: The 1975 North America Tour 2022 - I have never clicked quicker in my life to get to a ticket queue. (Thank you to Jerney if you are reading this) It’s been way too long of a wait to finally go see the 1975 in concert, but the wait is over. Also ticket prices were AMAZING. Got amazing seats so going to enjoy them in Toronto in December!
